Lot Details

Lot 30
Lokris. Opous, ca. 365-338 BC. AR Stater (11.8g).
Humphris & Delbridge Group 20, cf. 141 (dies O13A/R51?).
Obverse: Head of Demeter or Persephone facing left. Reverse: Ajax the Lesser advancing right, holding short sword and oval shield, interior decorated with a serpent; behind legs, a broken spear and between legs, the hero's name; below, Boeotian helmet. Extremely fine, finest style, sharp and complete detail, tight flan.
N.B. H&D 141, with the reverse R51, appears to match this coin, but is presumably of a later reverse die state, with Ajax's name erased and the last two letters of the ethnic moved; R72 of Group 25 also shows the name.
Ex: Fortuna Fine Arts, 1990.
