Lot Details

Lot 113
[FLORIDA--LAFAYETTE] An extensive archive of documents pertaining to a lawsuit over the estate of William B. Nuttall, Jefferson County, Territory of Florida, circa
1840. Consisting of a printed summons, depositions, trial proceedings etc. Approximately ten documents in about thirty leaves; these mostly sworn copies etc. Some fraying, wear.

A significant archive pertaining to a legal controversy in the nascent State of Florida (then a U.S. Territory), stemming from a $5,000 deficit in assets against the liabilities of the estate of William B. Nuttall. Nuttall, with his partners Hector W. Braden, and William P. Craig, had purchased lands granted to the Marquis de Lafayette by Congress, after a Utopian venture Lafayette had established on the granted land failed. Upon Nuttall's death in 1836, it was found that his financial affairs were in disarray, and (though there seems to be disagreement on this point) that he had died intestate. The present papers provide a deep insight into the ensuing lengthy and very messy litigation, important to the history of the region.
