New York: D. Appleton, 1848. First edition, the illustrated issue. Custom cloth binding stamped in gilt with a Native American to the upper cover and crossed tomahawks to the lower cover, the spine with morocco lettering labels. 9 x 5 1/2 inches (23 x 14 cm); 557, [32] pp., with a folding map "Sketch of the Southern part of Florida" and 10 plates. The map mounted to silk repairing a tear, the text and plates heavily toned and with occasional stains, the spine sunned and with a small spot to the upper cover, an old dealer description is pasted to the front free endpaper and a modern map of Florida to the rear pastedown, with the bookplate of G. Owen Bonawit with the same Native American figure as the cover (the bookplate in the style of Rockwell Kent).
