Lot 129
[WEST FLORIDA] MACKENZIE, JOHN. Petition signed to Governor Peter Chester requesting a land grant.
Pensacola: 7 March 1776. A one page document in a secretarial hand signed in ink "John Mackenzie," the petition addressed to Governor Peter Chester requesting "one hundred acres about four miles up the River Chefuncto from Lake Ponchartrain." 12 x 7 1/2 inches (30 x 18 cm). Toned but fine; Accompanied by a contemporary copy of a passport issued by the War Office at Yorktown, dated 15 October 1777, to Tacitus Gilliard of South Carolina, "being on his way to Florida" via the Ohio River and having taken an oath to the United States. This document is described as a copy made for the court martial. Fine overall.

A rare petition to Peter Chester seeking land for an unnamed man wanting to settle and improve lands in West Florida. This document accompanied by a copy of a document issued by American authorities allowing one Tacitus Gilliard of South Carolina to pass through to Florida and it appears Gilliard eventually settled in Natchez. While the link between these two documents is unclear, they have been housed together since acquisition by Mr. Kislak in 1993.
