San Francisco: Grabhorn Press for the Book Club of California, 1931. First edition, one of 300 copies. Publisher's brown goatskin, cloth sides in cloth slipcase. 13 1/2 x 10 inches (34 x 24 cm); [12], 272 p.; [18] leaves of plates. Light binding wear, soiling, corners a bit jambed, short tear to fold of first plate.
Printed by the Grabhorn brothers, Robert and Edward, this handsome work came out at $30, a high price for the time, in the middle of the Great Depression. It was recognized as a typographic masterpiece early on; it was made one of the Fifty Books of the Year for 1931, and features on most lists of American fine printing.
