LANE, EDWARD WILLIAM The Thousand and One Nights, Commonly Called in England, The Arabian Nights' Entertainment.
London: Charles Knight and Co., 1839-1841. First edition. Three volumes, dark blue calf, gilt ruled and decorated, spines each with three brown leather labels and four onlays, top edge gilt. 9 3/4 x 6 1/8 inches (25 x 15.5 cm); Volume I: xxxii, 618, [1] pp.; Volume II: xii, 643, [1] pp.; Volume III: xii, 763, [1] pp., with numerous wood engraved illustrations after William Harvey. Light edgewear, a few faint scuffs to the boards, contents with occasional pale spotting, altogether a very attractive set.

The first edition of Thomas Lane's English translation of The Arabian Nights, which "reigned as the leading English translation of the Nights for decades, and its copious notes are stimulating micro-essays of enduring value" (ODNB). The over 600 wood engraved illustrations after William Harvey were prepared in close collaboration with the translator, himself an expert in Arabian culture.
