Mazzei, the son of a Tuscan tradesman, was trained as a doctor. After a sixteen-year residence in London as a wine merchant, he moved to America intending to pursue viniculture. A correspondence with Thomas Jefferson had led to a friendship before he ever arrived, and upon visiting Jefferson in person, the latter gave him a tract of land on the south side of Monticello, to which Mazzei added 700 acres more by 1778. The resulting farm was named Colle. A fervent American patriot, Mazzei returned to raise funds for the American cause. According to Howes Jefferson may have assisted in the present work, which is the first history of the American Revolution to be published in French. Howes M456; Sabin 47206.
