San Francisco: Whitton, Towne & Co., 1857. Modern quarter grey calf gilt, contemporary marbled paper boards, spine gilt-ruled in five compartments, gilt-lettered in two 7 3/8 x 4 3/8 inches (18.75 x 11 cm); 438 pp.; engraved frontispiece and 5 plates. Rebacked, corners scuffed.
The Holliday copy of the first edition of the first book printed in California relating to Arizona, this includes H. S. Washburn's trip from Fort Yuma up the Gila River to Tucson and back by way of Alter and Sonoita in 1856, "travels in the Gadsden Purchase, the Tepic Conspiracy, copper mining, practicability of a railroad, American filibustering expedition, etc." Graff 4618; Howes W313; Wagner-Camp-Becker 294b.
