[WEST INDIES--VELLUM PRINTING] The New Laws of the Indies for the Treatment and Preservation of the Indians promulgated by the...
London: Privately printed at the Chiswick Press, 1893. Number 8 of 13 copies on heavy animal vellum (the entire edition 88 copies), this a facsimile of the 1543 original. Edited by Henry Stevens and Fred Lucas. Loose in publisher's decorated board portfolio as issued with maroon velvet straps, housed in the original morocco backed clamshell case with printed label on upper cover. 13 1/2 x 10 inches (34 x 24 cm); title printed in black and red, with woodcut initials and decoration throughout, the whole very finely printed on vellum. The contents fine, splits and rubbing to case and the label toned.

A fine facsimile, one of just 13 copies on vellum, and rare thus. This work was prepared by the renowned American bibliographer Henry Stevens who unfortunately did not live to see it issued. A note to the colophon reports the dedication to have been written by Stevens before his final illness. We trace few copies of the vellum edition at auction.
