[WEST INDIES] Collection of approximately fifteen various manuscript documents on the West indies, 18th-20th century.
A group of miscellaneous manuscript documents relating to islands in the West Indies. Highlights include two interesting legal documents regarding the "White Servants Act," the first relating the penalties for not providing "one white man for every forty slaves," the second document titled "Petition of the Coloured Population against the "White Servants Act" and providing their objections; an 1830 letter from the "African Institution Office" sending a petition "from the coloured inhabitants of the Island of Antigua" possibly related to the previous; a long letter from St. Kitts dated 1833 against slavery there; a long 1817 letter written from Antigua relating a 17th century history of a family living in the West Indies; a long document dated 1826 providing the "Rules and Orders of the Court of Chancery in Antigua," five pages with original seal and pink ribbon; a copy of a will dated 1806 from Jamaica; and others, the final two being early 20th century printed items, one of which is an elaborate 1906 prospectus of a sugar plantation in Antigua with two colored lithographed maps. Condition varies but generally sound.
An interesting miscellany of items relating to West Indies, particularly slavery in Antigua. This group sold as part of lot 1235, Sotheby and Co., February, 1968.
