New York: I. Riley & Co., 1806. First American edition, and the only edition in English. Period sprinkled calf, spine gilt lettered and decorated, all edges speckled red. 6 3/4 x 4 inches (17.5 x 10.25 cm); viii, 181 pp. Light wear to boards and rubbing to spine, spine ends chipped, corners softened, occasional toning and spotting to contents.
The Frank T. Siebert - Herschel V. Jones copy, in its contemporary sprinkled calf binding. A scarce and amusing, though oftentimes unflattering, picture of Spanish Louisiana and Florida at the beginning of the 19th century, just prior to the Louisiana purchase. It contains a wealth of information on New Orleans and Creole culture, as well as details about the region's agriculture, population, flora, fauna and history, as well as commentary on slavery, the Haitian Revolution, the region's Native American tribes, and General William Augustus Bowles. The translator's preface and notes provide corrections, precisions, asides and an American perspective on the original French text.
