ELIOT, T. S. [Pencil Drawings of a Cat, Bear, Giraffe, and Other Creatures].
With an ink note by Morley Kennerley: "Drawn by T. S. Eliot in Book Committee, 29 June, 1938, M. K." Sheet measures 8 1/8 x 9 7/8 inches (20.5 x 25.25 cm); Pencil drawing, sheet laid down on board, framed, xeroxed auction catalogue description on back of frame. A bit of smudging, old folds, lower left corner torn off, probably by Eliot, the paper bright and clean.
A rare association between T. S. Eliot and his close friend and colleague at Faber and Faber, Morley Kennerley. Apparently doodled during office hours while in a book committee meeting, this charming example of T. S. Eliot's anthropomorphic animal drawing is reminiscent of his classic illustrated book of poems Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. This was drawn in the year before that book's publication.
