Lot Details

Lot 67
GIBSON, RALPH (b. 1939) Three untitled architectural abstractions, from the Gotham Chronicles
series, 1985. Chromogenic prints, each 17 7/8 x 12 inches (452 x 302 mm), each signed and dated on verso 1985. No defects noted in raking light.
These unusual vertical format compositions by Gibson incorporate architectural details with negative space (in one case incorporating the texture of a doorman's coat) to achieve a rich and complex abstract composition. These are some of the earliest images in the Gotham Chronicles sequence that we have seen (Gibson dates the series 1985-2005 on his website). These relate in both form and format to his more recent Vertical Horizon work. Though probably best known for his black and white work, Gibson is a virtuosic photographer in color as well.
