Holly Woodlawn (1946-2015) was an important transgender actor and Warhol Superstar. Born Juana Díaz in Puerto Rico and raised in Miami, Woodlawn adopted the name Holly after Breakfast at Tiffany's. Woodlawn hitchhiked to New York and met Warhol at a screening of Flesh in 1968. Woodlawn starred in Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey's Trash in 1970 and Women in Revolt in 1971 alongside Joe Dallesandro, Candy Darling and Jackie Curtis. This group of actors was immortalized in Lou Reed's 1972 Walk on the Wild Side which opens with the memorable lines "Holly came from Miami, F.L.A., hitchhiked her way across the U.S.A." In 1992, Woodlawn published the memoir A Low Life in High Heels.
This invitation to Heidi Woodlawn's 40th birthday party at the Michael Todd Room is a scarce piece of Warhol ephemera. The party took place in December 1986 and Warhol died following surgery on 22 February 1987. We trace one example at auction sold at Christie's London, 15 November 2011, lot 21.
