NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held a successful auction of 20th Century Abstraction on October 12, 2022 showcasing abstract art spanning the 1940s through the end of the century. From the American Abstract Expressionists, as well as several prototypical artists that predated them, the auction documented the global evolution of abstraction within and beyond the fabled New York School; including Color Field artists, hard-edge abstraction, Minimalism and much more. In addition to Abstract art, the sale offered a special section devoted to works by prominent Latin American artists. Read More

With competitive bidding the sale totaled a strong $1,156,441 within the estimate of $875,600-1,432.400 with a strong 81% sold by lot and 100% sold by value.

Mark di Suvero
Highlighting the sale was a 1966 sculpture of welded steel by Mark di Suvero that achieved an exceptional $94,500, doubling its $30,000-50,000 estimate. One of the best-known sculptors of the Abstract Expressionist movement, Mark di Suvero has been exhibiting his abstract sculptures since the late 1950s. From 1966, Untitled (Rectangles) has a formidable history of global exhibition. First exhibited in 1967 at the City Art Museum in St. Louis, the sculpture would later travel to Kassel, Germany to be a part of the landmark 1968 Documenta IV exhibition. In 1994, Untitled (Rectangles) would be a part of the Mark di Suvero retrospective at the IVAM Centre Julio Gonzalez, in Valencia, Spain. Purchased directly from the artist by a private collector in 1968, the work had remained in the family since shortly after its creation.

Friedel Dzubas
Arriving in New York City during WWII after fleeing Germany, Dzubas shared a studio with Helen Frankenthaler, and would come to adopt her techniques of stain painting. From 1974, the large-scale canvas Oldenburg shows Dzubas at his best, with bold bands of color in Magna, a paint originally developed for Color Field painter Morris Louis. The work realized $81,900, far over its estimate of $40,000-60,000.

Sam Francis
Balancing Abstract Expressionism, Color Field painting, West Coast abstraction and Japanese calligraphy within his body of work, Sam Francis was one of the first Post-War American abstract painters to receive worldwide acclaim. With Krater, 1985 Francis showcases the high-key colors he is best known for, within a composition that reflects the influences that Jackson Pollock and Clyfford Still had on his work. The painting sold for $68,040, surpassing its $40,000-60,000 estimate.
