Painted Fabric George Washington at Dorchester Heights Centennial Banner
Late 19th century
Designed after the 1806 Gilbert Stuart portrait depicting General Washington full length standing beside his horse, with ships beyond, the image flanked by patriotic linen drapery, and mounted to a strip of molded wood along the top edge, now housed in a modern shadowbox frame. Framed 65 1/2 x 59 1/2 inches.
Note: A letter from the Museum Interpreter at the John Jay Homestead in Katonah, New York, indicates that the scene shown here was also depicted in a print done by Thomas Kellly after a copy of the original Stuart by M.A. Swett.
The Gilbert Stuart work in question hung at Faneuil Hall from the painting's completion in 1806 until 1876, at which point it was moved to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where it hangs today.
