Lot Details

Lot 112
HEMINGWAY, ERNEST Ardievas Ierociem [A Farewell to Arms].
[Orebro, Sweden:] Parnass, ]1949]. First Latvian edition, inscribed by Hemingway to Fraser Bragg Drew (see note). Original printed wrappers. 7 3/4 x 5 inches (19.5 x 13 cm); 280 pp. Fine overall, an unopened copy, a small label in English to the foot of the spine, light wear to extremities, with the booklabel of Fraser Bragg Drew.

Provenance: Bauman Rare Books

Hemingway has humorously inscribed this Latvian edition of A Farewell to Arms, believed to be from his own collection, to a young literature professor: "For Fraser Bragg Drew/from his friend/Ernest Hemingway/(read this for home-work)/E.H." Drew had written to Hemingway and, after a long wait, received a response along with a group of signed books. Hemingway later invited Drew to meet him at Finca Vigia in Cuba and on this visit presented him with signed books from his collection, including foreign translations, presumably the source of this uncommon edition, which is still less common inscribed.

See Brucolli, Matthew. Conversations with Ernest Hemingway, p. 89-98.
