Lot Details

Lot 185
HOCKNEY, DAVID A Retrospective.
Los Angeles Museum of Art/Harry N. Abrams, [1988]. A presentation copy, inscribed on the two-page spread of the verso of the front free endpaper and the half-title with a large drawing in ink and gouache (with small hand-stamps) to "Gray" and "Leo" i.e. the artist Gray Foy and his partner and Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Leo Lerman. Publisher's cloth in dust jacket. 11 x 10 1/8 inches (28 x 25.5 cm); 288, [23] pp.; illustrated throughout. About fine.

Hockney prepared a number of elaborate presentation copies of the present work for close friends, most of which incorporate elements in the present design e.g. an easel with the name of the recipient, an image of his dog Stanley, a vase or tree on the left etc. This has all of those elements, and makes playful use as well of a small hand-stamp reading "hand stamped David Hockney." The design is also signed by him as "David" in blue paint below the recipient's names on the easel.
