WARHOL, ANDY and BEUYS, JOSEPH Printed invitation addressed to Sao Schumberger for a party held by the Italian art dealer Lucio Amelio hosting Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol, held in Naples, April 1, 1980.
Signed by Joseph Beuys with a drawing of a hat, and by Andy Warhol with a dollar sign and "love to Sao." Mounted on a sheet from an album. 4 3/8 x 6 5/8 inches (11.5 x 17 cm). mounted to a leaf (perhaps from an album) with a newspaper photograph and small offset print showing Warhol, Beuys and Schlumberger together at the party. Laid down as noted, central fold.
The recipient of this invitation, Maria "São" Schlumberger, was (with her husband Pierre) the creator of one of the great 20th century art collections. It was liquidated at auction over four days in 2014. She was a champion of Warhol, and in return was the subject of a remarkable four-part Warhol painting, drawings and photographs by him etc. Lucio Amelio, who held the party, introduced Warhol to Beuys in 1980, and organized an exhibition of portraits by both artists.
