[Cologne: circa 1577]. Engraved map, hand colored. Framed. Sheet measures 16 x 20 7/8 inches (41.5 x 53 cm). Central fold, faint light-stain to margins, one minor spot and a few old creases in margins, certificate of authenticity affixed to rear of frame, an attractive example.
Braun and Hogenberg's bird's eye view map of Canterbury from their landmark atlas of city views, the Civitates Orbis Terrarum. Canterbury is shown from the south, surrounded by fortifications and dominated by its famous Cathedral. Heraldic crests of the British Isles, the city, the archbishopric, and Christ Church College are shown, and four figures in English period dress populate the foreground.
