Lot Details

Lot 31
[POLITICAL SATIRE] [WAGSTAFFE, WILLIAM]. The testimonies of several citizens of Fickleborough, in the Kingdom of Fairy-Land, concerning the life and character of Robert Hush, commonly called, Bob. To which are prefixed, some memoirs of the life of Charity Hush, the grandfather, and of Oliver Hush, the Father of the said Bob.
London: Printed for John Morphew near Stationers Hall, 1713. First and only edition. Modern wrappers. 7 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches (19 x 11.5 cm); [23, [1] pp. Minor dust-soiling to title, in all a sound example; together with [ARBUTHNOT, JOHN or SWIFT, JONATHAN (doubtful)]. Proposals for printing a very curious discourse, in two volumes in quarto, intitled, Pseudologia politike; or, a treatise of the art of political lying, with an abstract of the first volume of the said treatise. London: printed for John Morphew, near Stationers-Hall, 1712. First edition. Modern wrappers. 7 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches (19 x 11.5 cm); 22, [2] pp. Old institutional stamp on first and final leaf (Yale, 19[0?]1).

Two rare satirical pamphlets printed by Morphew. The first is an amusing and eccentric satire on Robert Walpole (called Robert Hush here), and is ESTC T99516. The second has been attributed (unfortunately, likely incorrectly) to Swift, and is a (spurious and humorous) proposal to publish a learned work on the art of lying in political discourse. Both works were published at threepence. Teerink-Scouten, 875 ("doubtful"); ESTC T75422.
