Lot 45
[JUDAICA] GINSBURG, SHIMON LEVY. Sefer Minhagim.
Amsterdam: Isaac de Cordova for Hertz Levi Rofe. 1723. Modern maroon morocco, blind tooled edges, panel and centerpiece, gilt stamped on boards and spine, spine in five compartments, gilt dentelles. 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (19 x 14 cm); 61 ff., printed in Yiddish using Wayber-taytsch characters with some Hebrew in square type, woodcut title page and 40 woodcut text illustrations. Some staining and browning, some worming affecting a few words.

Intended for a secular audience, the Sefer Minhagim, originally composed by Issac Tyrnau in the fifteenth century (first printed 1566), provides guidance for the correct household conduct of major Jewish festivals and other ceremonies. Editions appeared subsequently throughout the sixteenth century intended for lay audiences. The work is written in Yiddish for those readers who were not schooled in Hebrew, and because of this accessibility it enjoyed immense popularity. The present edition contains an unusually charming series of woodcut illustrations depicting celebrations etc. Of especial note are the female costumes, the ritual details (e.g. the form of the Sabbath lamp and the Havdalah accoutrements), death omens and other folk beliefs, the interior of the synagogue, the wedding ceremony, the Purim mummers, and even the barber's shop included to illustrate Lag ba-Omer.
