Lot 60
[ISRAEL - MANDATORY PALESTINE] Two early books on the precursor to the State of Israel, Mandatory Palestine.
Comprising: LEISRAEL, KEREN KAYEMETH and KEREN HAYESOD. A Guide to Jewish Palestine. Jerusalem: Azriel Printing Works, 1927. Stapled in original printed light blue paper wrapper, housed in a custom blue cloth clamshell box. 7 1/8 x 5 inches (18.25 x 12.75 cm); 73 pp., plates after photographs, double-page map in text. Wear to wrapper with toning, staining and few short edge tears, a crack along the spine, faint crease to lower front corner, small loss at lower rear corner, Czech library stamps; together with: [VARIOUS AUTHORS]. Reports of the Experts Submitted to the Joint Palestine Survey Commission. Boston: Daniels Printing Co., 1928. Original printed blue paper wrapper, in a custom blue cloth clamshell case. 741 pp., illustrations after photographs, folded tables and maps. Light wear to wrappers with some faint creasing around corners and toning to spine, a short crack along spine, contents with a short marginal tear effecting the first few leaves.

Two scarce books about Mandatory Palestine, published relatively soon after its 1917 inception. The Guide focuses on modern Palestine rather than on historic monuments: "most guidebooks devote so much attention to the unique historic monuments of the Holy Land that modern Palestine is almost perforce overlooked." The Reports, containing ten articles by different experts, focuses on the agricultural development of Palestine. Both books contain detailed information on Jewish co-operative settlements, or kibbutzes.
