[FORE-EDGE PAINTING] The Guardian.
London: Printed by T. Gillet (for various publishers), 1797. Two volumes, full straight-grain green morocco simply gilt, all edges gilt, in later slipcase; each volume with a fine concealed fore-edge painting of a London scene, neatly identified in ink on the verso of the front free endpaper. 10 x 6 1/8 inches (25.5 x 5.5 cm); iv, 508 pp.; (ii), 531 pp. Joints rubbed, spines toned to brown, first blank with an 1803 ownership inscription and a modern inscription (1930) noting these as a wedding gift.

The first volume has a view of the old "Tabard" Inn, Southwark; the second of Furnival's Inn, Holborn. Provenance: J.N. Bartfield.
