The portfolio contains a full set of ten chromolithographs depicting Emperor Nicholas II in the uniforms of the ten regiments under his direct command. The lithographs were executed after paintings by Hugo Karlovich Backmanson (1860-1953), a Finnish born artist, who served as an officer in the Izmailovsky regiment.
This album was published in limited edition to be distributed to the nobility who were close to the Russian Imperial family.
The present album was presented to General Alexander Nikolaevich Meller-Zakomelsky (1844-1928), who was born into a prominent baronial family, descended from General-in-Chief I.I. Meller. He had a distinguished military career, which included service in the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878 and a promotion in 1883 to the rank of Major General. By 1906, he had served the rank of General of Infantry. In 1905, Meller-Zakomelsky put down a sailors' mutiny in Sevastopol and was assigned to restore order on the Trans-Siberian Railway. From 1906 to 1909, he served as the interim governor-general of the Baltic region and he was appointed a member of the State Council. During the First World War, the general was appointed inspector of medical institutions in Petrograd, finally emigrating to France in 1919, where he lived out the remainder of his life.
