Lot 530
Circle of Francois Boucher
Shepherd and Shepherdess
Inscribed Boucher (ll) Red chalk on paper
11 1/8 x 16 1/2 inches (28.3 x 42 cm)
Provenance:
Collection of Dr. Carlisle Adams and Professor Margery Williams Adams, Professor of Art History at Queens University, Charlotte, NC
This intriguing drawing is a replica of a painting by Boucher that belongs to the Musée du Louvre, but which is now on loan to the Assemblée Nationale in Paris (Alexandre Ananoff and Daniel Wildenstein, Boucher, no. 260). This drawing was most likely made in preparation for an engraving after the painting. Since no such engraving is known, one can only guess at the reasons for its absence, but it may be that the artist realized that a very similar print had already been produced. That is one of the four engravings titled Les Amours Pastorales, which Claude Duflos made from drawings by Boucher, the one whose quatrain begins: Approchons doucement, oui, Thémire sommeille . . . (Pierrette Jean-Richard, L'oeuvre gravé de François Boucher . . ., no. 930). Both Boucher's black chalk sketches for two of this set of prints and his two finished black chalk drawings for them survive (Ananoff, Boucher, 1966, nos. 227and 228, figs. 42 and 43; and British Museum, inv. nos. 1895,0915.954 and 955). We are grateful to Alastair Laing for his kind assistance in cataloguing this work.
