Oil on canvas
35 3/4 x 29 inches (90.8 x 73.6 cm)
Provenance:
Private collection, New York
Lieutenant Stephen Harvey (1757-1777) began his military career at 17, with a commission in the 12th Regiment of Foot in December 1774, later transferring to the 62nd Regiment of Foot, in which he joined the company of Captain George Marlay. Sent to North America to fight in the Revolutionary War, he took part in the Battle of Freeman's Farm, near Saratoga, New York, where he was mortally wounded on September 19, 1777. This work is a later copy, probably made for a family member, after an 18th-century original now in an English private collection.
