Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder was born into a remarkable family of artists that spanned four generations. He specialized in marine paintings, focusing not only on the sea, the sky and ships, but also on the buildings, fixtures and people at work on the nearby shore. Painted when the artist was in his 20s, this end-of-day view of workmen at a Dutch seaport is an extremely fine example of his early mature style.
