Lot 528
[PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM-JAVA] An album containing approximately 114 mounted carbon prints of views primarily of Java, many in the Buitenzorg Residency, Surabaya etc. in Western Java.
Undated, but circa 1900. Cloth photographic album. 9 1/4 x 12 3/8 inches (23.5 x 13.5 cm); 11 ff., with the prints mounted to both sides of the leaf, the largest about 4 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches (115 x 160 mm), some titled as to location in German. Some toning from the likely acidic mounts, a few images with very minor adhesions, the front hinge separated (and possibly lacking a leaf at the beginning), but the images generally attractive.
An appealing and aesthetically pleasing series of views of Java in the Dutch colonial era, apparently taken by a German traveller (N.B. the captions are German, not Dutch). Early views of the region are comparatively rare.
