DE MEYER, BARON ADOLPH (1868-1949) [Portrait of Rita de Acosta Lydig],
about 1900, probably vintage. Platinum print (unmounted), 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches (242 x 190 mm), unsigned, annotated in pencil on verso with the name of the subject. Minor wear to the edge of the print, slight fading from old mount tabs at the head, verso with trace of old mounts.
Few of De Meyer's images from this period survive, as he destroyed many in a fit of despondency following the death of his wife. Rita Hernandez de Alba de Acosta Stokes Lydig had a coterie that included Degas, Rodin, Tolstoy, Debussy and others. A feminist, she supported the cause of women's suffrage. Other images from this session with de Meyer exist, see for example https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fb/Rita-lydig-pic.jpg. With Robert Klein Galleries.
Norma Stevens represented Richard Avedon for thirty years, and her husband Martin (d. 2016) was an art and creative director for Revlon and other agencies.
