Featuring a Group of Contemporary Works by Los Angeles Artists from a Prominent Corporate Collection
NEW YORK, NY – Competitive bidding drove strong prices and world auction records at Doyle’s June 21, 2023 sale in the popular Fine Art auction category. Showcased were paintings, prints and sculpture spanning the Post-War years to the present day by established and emerging artists.
Made in L.A.
A group of Contemporary works by Los Angeles artists attracted the attention of bidders on both coasts and set World Auction Records for Chicano artists Carlos Almaraz and Robert Gil De Montes. Property from a Prominent Corporate Collection, the works were previewed in Doyle’s Beverly Hills gallery prior to the New York exhibition and sale.
Carlos Almaraz – A World Auction Record!
Otis College grad and political activist Carlos Almaraz was deeply involved in the civil rights movements of the 1970s, creating rally banners for the United Farm Workers labor union. Almaraz produced a number of public murals along with the other members of the Chicano Art group Los Four. Among the works included in this stellar collection were examples of Almaraz’ colorful narrative paintings, including his enigmatic 1986 work, Buffo’s Lament, that achieved $47,250 – A World Auction Record for the Artist.
Robert Gil De Montes – A World Auction Record!
Born in Guadalajara, Robert Gil De Montes graduated from Otis and immersed himself in the growing Chicano Art scene of the 1970s. De Montes divided his time between Mexico and Los Angeles throughout the 1980s before permanently locating to San Francisco in 2000. Like his Chicano Art peers, De Montes would combine Surrealism with local political actions and personal experiences in East Los Angeles. Morning Surprise depicts an abandoned car in a state of decomposition; the focal point of a barren, ominous landscape. Determined bidders drove this 1987 work to $34,650 -- A World Auction Record for the Artist.
Photographs
The June 21 auction also showcased Photographs from the 19th century to the present day comprising lots 501-631.
