Lot 190
Sam Kramer Silver and Moonstone Brooch
With maker's mark, ap. 12.5 dwts.

Sam Kramer (1913-1964) epitomized the idea of an 'eccentric artist,' in his search of making wearable-surrealism. A self-described 'rock hound,' Kramer would often incorporate fossils, teeth, meteorites and most infamously, taxidermy glass eyes in his signature dripping, blob-like designs. His work, often dismissed in his lifetime by traditionalists as that of "prekindergarten work or a mental therapy project," is now celebrated with the likes of fellow mid-century modernist studio jewelers Art Smith, Paul Lobel, and Jules Brenner, who's studios made them neighbors and creative confidants in the 1950's Greenwich Village counterculture movement.
