Arthur King Gold, Carved Frosted Rock Crystal and Black Onyx Ring
18 kt., signed King, ap. 20.4 dwts. gross. Size 4 3/4.
New Jersey-born jewelry designer Arthur King is considered by many to be the pioneer of the freeform gold movement that defined the 1960's and 70's. Known for his organic statement pieces, King transformed highly-curated found objects as well as uniquely cut and rough gemstones, pearls and fancy colored diamonds into sculptural works of art. Born in 1921, King opened his first store in the 1950's in New York, later opening locations in London, Cape Cod, Havana and Miami, among others. With the return to natural forms and textured metals, King's designs appealed to taste makers of the times like Barbara Hutton and Mary Hemingway. Entirely self-taught, King mastered his own method of lost wax casting that made for his substantive and vine-like designs.
