Minton Majolica 'Japanese Boat' Spill Vase
Designed by Johann (John) Hasselmann Hénk, shape no. 1926, circa 1875
After a Japanese ivory, modeled with two figures in Japanese costume in a narrow boat formed from a blooming prunus and pine tree, the hollow trunk with a female figure standing at the stern holding an oar-form rudder and a seated companion at the bow holding a fan before the open spill, turquoise interior, incised shape no., signed in the mold J. Henk. Height 6 inches, width 13 5/8 inches.

Johann (John) Hasselmann Hénk (1846-1914), son of Christian Hénk, joined the Minton firm in 1859 as an apprentice. He was to become Minton's Chief Staff modeler, specializing in majolica animals and figures.
