Jean Després Wide Silver and Gold Bracelet, France
Five slightly bombé rectangular hammered silver panels, gold discs, with maker's mark and French assay mark, circa 1955-1960, ap. 70 dwts. Length 7 inches.
Jean Després had a prolific career designing innovative and bold jewelry from the late 20's to early 70's. His fascination with machine parts used in his jewelry making originated working for an aircraft manufacturer and as a pilot, as well as his friendships with the Cubist artists of the time including Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, who shared a similar aesthetic. Després preferred working in metals of bold abstract and geometric motif with an occasional accent of a hardstone.
