NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle’s auction of Post-War & Contemporary Art on May 17, 2023 drew spirited bidding from around the globe. Offered together with Impressionist & Modern Art, the sale total topped $ million and set several auction records.

Encompassing important paintings and sculpture by American, European, Latin American and Asian artists, the offerings spanned artistic movements from Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and Minimalism, moving through Color School and Fluxus to Street Art, as well as works by emerging artists.

Friedel Dzubas - Sold for $176,400
Highlighting the sale was a 1985 abstraction by Friedel Dzubas that achieved $176,400, far surpassing its estimate of $90,000-120,000. Arriving in New York City during WWII after fleeing Germany, Dzubas shared a studio with Helen Frankenthaler, and would come to adopt her techniques of stain painting. This large-scale canvas Affirmative finds Dzubas at his most bold, with high-key colors in Magna, a paint originally developed for Color Field painter Morris Louis.

Competitive bidding also resulted in new U.S. Auction Records for works by Nathalie Decoster, Thilo Heinzmann and Liu Shiming.
