[HUNTING] Three manuscript game ledgers for locations including Balmacaan and Loch Ness; Coombe Abbey Moy Hall; Nantclwyd etc.
United Kingdom: 1888-1913 [with a few brief entries for 1916]. Each ledger with flexible leather covers stamped "Game Book." 11 1/4 x 12 1/2 inches (28.5 x 32 cm); approximately 100 preprinted leaves with types of game in column and shooting dates in rows, extensively completed in manuscript, primarily documenting the shooting parties of Bradley Martin (1841-1913), the American industrialist who had tenure of Balmacaan House and the prime hunting lands adjacent, in the Inverness region of Scotland. Light wear, but generally in sound condition.
A unique record of Bradley Martin's hunting parties in the Highlands etc. "Bradley Martin was born in the United States of America. From 1885 until 1913, he was tenant of Balmacaan sporting estate. He travelled to the Highlands in a specially hired train, which carried his horses and silver, and from this time until his death in 1913, he was a startling presence in the region. Martin and his parties hunted wildfowl, stags, and rabbits; occasional salmon-fishing forays are also recorded. A unique record of the hunting enthusiasms of one of the wealthiest American men in England. Sold with a fishing ledger belonging to a later generation of the family, including the landing of their first salmon. (4)
