Lot 53
[SPORTING CLUB] Manuscript record, apparently unique, of the proceedings of the Southbridge Rod and Gun Club of Massachusetts, June 21, 1900-April 14, 1908.
Minutes of the Club written in a notebook prepared by the secretaries of the Club (F. M. Marble, W. R. Hager and F. L. Dudley), from its foundation on. Half red roan, black cloth sides. 8 1/4 x 7 inches (21 x 17.5 cm); 121 numbered pp., of which approximately 90 pp. are neatly completed, with some laid-in resolutions, lists of members etc. Spine worn with losses at head and tail.
The minute-book of a fairly early rod and gun club, apparently no longer extant. The Southbridge Club was created at the time many such private sporting organizations were being formed; their history is interwoven with the burgeoning conservation movement that gave rise to the Catskill and Adirondack parks. Some of their clubs were grand affairs, with wealthy members and large and luxurious clubhouses; the present organization seems to have been run on a comparative shoestring.
