RIPLEY, ALDEN LASSELL Original drawings for the 1942-1943 Federal Duck Stamp, American Widgeon
together with trial proofs 1-5, so labelled by the artist. Three drawings on a single sheet, including one in ink and graphite of American Widgeon; a drawing in reduced size of the duck stamp in pencil as it would eventually appear; and a rough drawing of the flying widgeon. The main drawing for American Widgeon is 6 x 8 1/2 inches, (the size of the finished etching), and is signed below the design in pencil by Ripley and presented to Arthur Willis Jr. The sheet overall measures 14 1/4 x 10 1/4 inches (36 x 26 cm). The five unsigned proofs are each annotated by Ripley in pencil (as trial proofs one through five). The sheet of drawings and the five proofs are in enclosures edged in tape.
Alden Lassell Ripley (1896-1969) was among the preeminent sporting artists of the period, and, in an account prepared for Arthur Willis (see the subsequent lot in the present sale) he describes the process of preparing the present design.
