Additional Notes & Condition Report

In a strongly Confuscian society such as Korea's during the Yi Kingdom, the status of scholar was one for which every yangban strived as a pinnacle of his career and extraordinary efforts were made in the correct rearing and education of a child so that after years of study he might be able to pass his rigorous civil examinations and attain a position as a government official.

Because of the extreme importance is attaining official scholarship, the incidents in a scholar's life were organized in precise steps for advancement and screens such as this type show the accepted steps to advancement . From the right:
1. The child's first birthday celebration with the boy seated in the center of the composition with a striped jacket between his parents. In the courtyard outside are two attendants, two kaeseng and the charming genre additions of cockerel and a sleeping dog.
2. Wedding procession with the man on a white horse and his bride following on a brown steed.
3. Congratulatory procession after having won first place in the national examinations. Proceeded by three men with their own certificates, musicians and dancers. To proclaim his status for winning first place, the man sports cinnamon flowers in this hat of rank.
4. Arriving at his new posting as a magistrate.
5. Seen on the uniquely Korean vehicle of a one-wheeled chair, the man has been promoted to Official of the Second Rank. An extremely difficult position to hold, this rank entitles the holder to this special chair and a larger retinue.
6. In a formal palanquin, the scholar is on a specific royal mission, attended over a mountain pass by an even larger retinue than before.
7. Retirement after promotion to Official of the First Rank. Seated in an open sedan chair, he is protected by a large fan of rank held over his head.
8. His sixtieth wedding anniversary, a joyous occasion for his entire family, attended by the scholar and his wife.

Some scattered surface rubbing. but basically very solid state.
