Additional Notes & Condition Report

While cockatoos, long a popular subject in Chinese ceramics and metalwork, became extinct in southern China by the 15th century, Annamese missions to China often brought them as tribute. Wares such as this example, bearing some Islamic motifs in its decoration and form, were produced, because of the complications of construction, in small quantities in Northern Vietnam and exported from the ports of Van Don (near Haiphong) or Hoi An, south of HuÚ. It was from the ocean site of the foundering of one of these shipments that this example was retrieved.

Restoration to handle and mouth; surface 'softened' by exposure to sea water.
