Additional Notes & Condition Report

Mitsuaki was the go of Goto Hojo (died 1856), sixteenth and last Master of the Goto Shirobei line. His work is more typically Goto than that of Shinjo (died 1834) or Keijo (died 1804), the fourteenth and fifteenth Masters. After his death, there was a scramble to find a successor by Goto Ichijo who proposed two of his own students. Since Hojo never appointed anyone as a worthy successor, no seventeenth Master has ever been recognized. Desipte his remarkable ability as an artisan, he is less well known for some less-than-honorable activity, namely creating fakes of earlier Masters or falsely attesting works to earlier Masters so that almost all works found with his attribution should be considered suspect.

Some negligible dents and scratches to the back of the shakudo frame; blades in good state.
