Clemens, Samuel L. (Mark Twain)
Autograph note signed ("S.L. Clemens"), eight lines, on blue 4to envelope, Tarrytown, 2 July 1895, to "Dear Clara [Spaulding Stanchfield]," beneath three stanza autograph poem signed with initials "M.T." beginning "If you prove right & I prove wrong..." Clemens forwards this "rough old original draft" that Mrs. Stanchfield had asked for.
Provenance: Clara Spaulding Stanchfield, by descent to the present owner.
