Gentleman's Cut Velvet Suit
French or Italian, circa 1760
Comprising a coat, waistcoat and breeches, of muted coral velvet patterned with beige floral sprigs outlined in black against a black brickwork pattern ground, the coat with large gold stippled metal buttons, the waistcoat with smaller similar buttons, the breeches with self covered buttons.
Good condition, overall fading, some lining damage, smaller buttons probably not original.
A suit of the same fabric without the brick patterned ground is illustrated in Avril Hart and Susan North, Fashion In Detail From the 17th and 18th Centuries, pp.83, 101.
