The Young Recruit is one of Eastman Johnson's few civil war subjects executed during the war itself. His more famous and certainly more sentimental Wounded Drummer Boy was painted in 1871. The painting does, however deal with tragic effect of war on the youth of the day.
Here we see a young recruit who appears to be no more than fourteen to sixteen years old almost overwhelmed by his kit and uniform
