Pinchart, a student of Gerome, was a member of the Societaire des Artistes Francais from 1905 and exhibited regularly at the Salon in Paris, receiving an hororable mention in 1883. He is best known for his depictions of domestic genre scenes set in 18th-century costume and for his depictions of beautiful country maidens in the out-of-doors. This painting is similar in composition to Her First Steps, sold Phillips, Son & Neale, July 16, 1985.
