Carl Hilgers
German, 1818 - 1890
WINDY DAY NEAR THE MILL
Signed and dated C. Hilgers 1852 (lr)
Oil on canvas laid to aluminum
24 1/2 x 32 1/2 inches (62 x 82.5 cm.) Hilgers, a major proponent of the Dusseldorf School, began his career at the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf from 1833 - 1844 as a pupil of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. Although he traveled extensively through Germany, Belgium, Holland and France, apart from a four year stay in Berlin, Hilgers spent his entire life centered in Dusseldorf. He was admired by his contemporaries for his free brushwork and his mastery of technique, which can be compared to the work of his fellow Dusseldorf artist, Caspar Scheuren. As is evidenced with this painting, his preferred subject matter is the atmospheric, mist shrouded environs which are based in part on the locations around Dudsseldorf. The Romantic vision of his landscapes is heightened by the incidental figures which aggrandize the power of nature that surrounds them.
