A letter affixed to the back of the painting attributes it to Amos Twitchel [sic], probably meaning the Albany portraitist Asa Weston Twitchell.

Additional Notes & Condition Report

Panel is slightly warped. Craquelure. Dirty varnish. Frame rubbing. Four quarter-sized spots of inpainting in the upper right area. There may be some spots of inpainting in his face. Under UV light the varnish masks the detection of further restoration.
