NIELSEN, KAY Original drawing in watercolor, ink, & pencil
Original drawing in watercolor, ink, and pencil, heightened with white and gold, illustration for Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales, New York, 1924. 14 x 10 inches. Framed.
The scene illustrated by Nielsen occurs in the Andersen story "Hyldemoer" ["The Elder-Tree Mother"]. In the English translation by Jean Hersholt an old man tells a little boy: "Well, the Romans and the Greeks... used to call her a 'Dryad', but we don't understand that word. Out in New Town, where the sailors live, they have a better name for her. There she is called Elder Tree Mother... that glorious elder tree stands in New Town. It grows in the corner of a poor little yard; and under that tree two old people sat one afternoon in the bright sunshine...The Elder Tree Mother sat in the tree and looked pleased."
