'Narrows' refers to the landscape of Indian mounds and hills located on both sides of the highway between the Alabama and Mississippi state borders. This area was familiar to Mitchell as he drove to and from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 1948 to study art for the summer at the University of Alabama. Painted in 1957 from memory using broad strokes of pure color, the image references the landscape during a storm on one such trips.
